A photograph showing my daughter walking towards me at her wedding was the starting point of this series. It struck me that with every step, she was also walking away, to her new life. I started thinking about how I could visually communicate the idea of experiencing one moment as two truths.

Reflecting on relationships and parenthood, I created collages and digital designs from an outline of a woman reaching out. Sections of the collage shapes became the basis of the multi-layered oil paintings. To show different perspectives, I used palette knives, brushes and wire wool to create areas of contrast between light and dark, smooth and scratched and positive and negative shapes. In the smaller works I also made use of both horizontal and vertical format to suggest two perspectives.

As with much of my abstract work, in this series there are suggestions of natural elements such as earth, sky and water. From a distance the paintings give an impression of simple forms and but as you look closer, the details and colours beneath the colours emerge. My two truths were about a personal experience, but in our complex world, depending on where we stand and what we are able to see, they can also be applied to global and planetary ones.
